In his post-game interview Saturday night, guard Marcus Thornton emphatically thanked the fans. “Man I love Kings fans,” Thornton declared, and it was clear the feeling was mutual. In front of a packed house of more than 16,000, Thornton came off the bench to score 24 points and help ignite the Kings to a 120-109 victory over the visiting Utah Jazz.
Recording a handful of assists, including a lob to 6’11 forward Jason Thompson late in the second half that nearly brought down the house, Thornton and the Kings finally gave Sacramento fans something to cheer about. With ongoing speculation that the team will in fact be moving to Seattle at seasons end and coming off a disappointing six game road trip, things haven’t looked good for the struggling 18-33 squad. However it was all smiles Saturday night, as the Kings avenged a 98-91 defeat in Utah earlier in the week.
A late game “Wave” and continued cheers of “Sac-ra-mento” and “Here We Stay” could be heard long after the final buzzer had sounded, rocking the building and bringing hope to a city the team has called home for more than 20 years. Hopefully Thornton and the rest of the Kings roster can keep the momentum going tomorrow night, as James Harden and the visiting Rockets arrive in town for battle. Stay tuned!
